Caminando en Sus Huellas
This symbol refers to having inward vision, outward vision and future vision. When I was 17 I lost vision in my left eye and this visual impairment has impacted my life and art in many ways. Having an inner vision has helped me see what my eyes cannot.
This series of work is inspired by tiles of Puerto Rico and Cuba, the birthplaces of my ancestors, through colonization of these lands by Spain, a country that was previously ruled by the Moors of North Africa. The art we see under our feet carries the influence of all of these people and places. My work add to this history, using the templates of my ancestors, I create symbols and designs that speak to my identity and culture as part of this ancestral continuum in the diaspora to explain who we are and where we come from. I place importance in elevating stories of the past and documenting this moment in time to add my voice to the story.
