This series of work is inspired by tiles of Cuba and Puerto Rico, the birthplaces of my ancestors. My work investigates Spanish colonization of the Caribbean and shifts the lens to focus on the African influence when the Moors ruled Spain. My work seeks to elevate this history and add to it with imagery that represents a contemporary view of the Caribbean diaspora. Using using the templates of my ancestors, I create symbols and designs that speak to identity and culture as part of this ancestral continuum to explore who we are and where we come from. I place importance in elevating stories of the past and documenting this moment in time to add my voice to the story.
